Mycology & Color: Mushroom Dyes

  • Wildcraft Studio School 601 Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard Portland, OR, 97214 United States (map)

Though mysterious, and hard to find, fungi have long been used as natural dyes, yielding some of nature's most vibrant colors. WildCraft is pleased to offer this rare chance to explore mushrooms as a source of natural dye, and we are honored to host artist, farmer, and aspiring mycologist Julie Beeler of Trout Lake, WA as our guide through this process. Beginning with the fundamentals of dye techniques, Julie will engage students in introductory mushroom ID as the group explores the myriad of shades these forest fungi offer us. Students will leave with wool fiber samples in a rainbow of colors, a large hand-dyed silk scarf, and an instructional craft-book that includes mushroom dye recipes.

Tuition $140. Materials $20. No previous experience necessary, though a fantastic workshop for practicing dyers. Open to students 16 & up.
